IAEA: Iran complying with nuclear deal

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Iran’s Interior Minister says vote counting is underway after the Assembly of Experts and parliamentary elections on Friday. Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said between 70 to 80 percent of the results will be announced tonight. Iranian officials put the voter turnout for at around 33 million.
     
  • The International Atomic Energy Agency has said in a report that Iran is complying with the landmark nuclear agreement reached with the P5+1 group back in 2015. The report says all stored centrifuges and associated infrastructure have remained in storage under continuous monitoring by the IAEA.
     
  • Iran and Switzerland have drawn up a comprehensive roadmap for cooperation. The Swiss president says based on the roadmap, Tehran and Vienna will implement their agreements and complete joint projects. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani also said Switzerland will continue to help his country join the World Trade Organization.
     
  • Iraq has summoned the Emirati ambassador to Baghdad after the sheikhdom’s foreign minister labeled Iraqi popular mobilization forces as terrorists. The office of Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has described the comments by Abdullah Bin Ziad Al Nahyan as interference in Iraq’s internal affairs.
     
  • Russia says it has halted airstrikes in Syria in accordance with a ceasefire agreement brokered by Moscow and Washington. The Russian General Staff head Lieutenant General Sergei Rudskoi said warplanes fully suspended the bombing campaign against the areas where foreign-backed militants have requested ceasefire.
     
  • A car bomb explosion has left at least four people dead in the Syrian province of Hama. The bomb went off at the entrance of the town of Salamiyah. The incident happened only hours after a ceasefire brokered by Russia and the US went into effect.
     
  • Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar Jaafari has called on the West and its allies in the region to end backing the terrorist groups in the war-torn country. During a UN Security Council meeting, Jaafari warned that Syria has the right to respond if the truce fails to implement.
     
  • A bomb explosion in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Kunar has killed at least ten people. Local sources say a prominent tribal leader was the target. No group has claimed responsibility yet. But Afghan officials usually blame the Taliban for similar attacks.
