US, Russia reach provisional deal on Syria truce

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Israeli forces have killed another Palestinian in the occupied West Bank. The army says the troops opened fire on a 15-year-old boy near a checkpoint in Nablus after he charged toward them with a knife. Palestinian sources say the teenager was left bleeding to death on the scene.
     
  • US Secretary of State John Kerry says a provisional agreement has been reached with Russia on ending hostilities in Syria. Kerry expressed hope that the US and Russian leaders would discuss the conditions for truce in the near future. The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed the news.
     
  • Twin bomb blasts hit the Syrian city of Homs, killing at least 32 people. Many others have been wounded. Opposition sources have put the death toll at 46. The central city of Homs is largely under government control and has regularly been the target of bomb attacks.
     
  • Yemeni forces have reportedly captured a Saudi drone near a village in the kingdom’s border region of Jizan. Yemeni media say a technical team of the army and popular forces managed to bring down the aircraft intact. There’s been no comment from Saudi Arabia about the news yet.
     
  • The US Air Force says one of its drones has crashed at a base in southern Afghanistan. The aircraft went down at Kandahar Airfield, but there were no casualties. American officials say they're investigating the incident, but have rejected the possibility of hostile fire.
     
  • Hundreds of Japanese people have taken to the streets of Tokyo to protest the construction of a new US military base on the Okinawa Island. Japanese officials say the facility will replace the existing Futenma airbase located in a heavily populated area. Okinawa is home to about 25,000 US troops.
     
  • A series of shootings in the US state of Michigan has left at least seven people dead and several others wounded. Police say they have a suspect in custody. The number of deadly shootings in the US has been on the rise in recent years.
     
  • Niger is holding presidential and parliamentary elections amid tight security over fears of attacks by extremist groups. President Mahamadou Issoufou is hoping to secure a second term in office. His main rival, Hama Amadou, is currently behind bars on charges of trafficking babies. He strongly denies the allegations.
