EU urges Greece to treat refugees better

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Iranian people hold rallies nationwide to mark the 37th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution's victory. The Islamic Revolution emerged victorious on February 11, or Bahman 22, 1979 after toppling the US-backed Pahlavi regime which was the last monarchy to rule Iran.
     
  • Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has addressed millions of demonstrators marking the 37 anniversary of the Islamic Revolution’s victory in Tehran. He said the nuclear deal between Iran and P5+1 group of countries has made the world realize that Iranians do not give in to pressure.
     
  • Military chiefs from US, South Korea and Japan have agreed to step up information-sharing and security coordination to tackle North Korea’s threats. They described Pyongyang’s recent nuclear and missile tests as a direct violation of UN resolutions and serious provocations against the international community.
     
  • Russia says it’s ready to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire in Syria at the meeting of the International Syria Support Group in Munich that starts later today. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said the talks will cover the modalities of a truce.
     
  • Two US Republican presidential candidates have suspended their campaign. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina decided to drop out of the race for the White House. Their departure leaves seven republicans remain in the race. Billionaire candidate Donald Trump is leading other hopefuls.
     
  • Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters and allied army units have launched a fresh retaliatory attack against Saudi soldiers in the kingdom’s southwestern region of Asir. At least three Saudi troops have been killed in the attack. On Wednesday, Yemeni forces also killed a soldier in Saudi Arabia’s Jizan region.
     
  • The EU Migration Commissioner warns Greece that mistreating asylum seekers could jeopardize the bloc’s passport-free zone. Dimitris Avramopoulos urged Athens to treat refugees better so that other EU states can send back refugees to Greece. He called on Athens to do more before a new surge of refugees this summer.
     
  • The death toll from a weekend earthquake in southern Taiwan has climbed to 59, with more than 75 people still missing. Over the last two days, a total of nine bodies have been recovered from the debris of a collapsed building in Tainan City.
