Israel Knesset suspends MKs who met Palestinians

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir says the US has welcomed Riyadh’s offer to send troops to engage in ground operations in Syria. Riyadh claims its troops will operate under the US command to fight against Daesh terrorists in Syria. The offer, however, comes amid the recent gains by the Syrian army.
     
  • Foreign-backed militants in Syria have called for the unity of rival factions in Aleppo against the government troops who are closing in on the strategic city. Syrian army forces, backed by Russian airstrikes, have already cut off supply lines for terrorists in Aleppo.
     
  • Former United Nations official Carla Del Ponte, who is currently probing rights abuses in Syria, has expressed support for Russia’s airstrikes against terrorist groups in the country. The former war crime prosecutor said the Russian military campaign in Syria is a good thing because finally someone is attacking the terrorists.
     
  • Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters and allied army units have killed at least fifteen mercenaries in southwestern Ibb province. The attack was in response to Saudi Arabia’s bombing of a water supply facility in capital Sana’a. Yemeni officials say 30,000 people are affected by the strike on the facility.
     
  • Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has temporarily suspended three lawmakers from its meetings over their visit of the families of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces. Netanyahu on Sunday vowed to advance a piece of legislation that enables the Knesset to disqualify members over what he called inappropriate behavior.
     
  • The Turkish president reportedly warned the European Union in November of letting refugees pour into Europe if the bloc didn’t offer Ankara a better deal. According to the Greek website euro-today, the demand was made during a meeting between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and EU officials Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Tusk.
     
  • The US defense department plans to deploy an advanced missile system to South Korea quickly to counter what it calls the threat of North Korea. The Pentagon will start formal talks with Seoul on placing the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System on the North's doorstep.
     
  • US presidential candidates enter the final stretch of campaigning on the eve of America’s first primary. Front runners Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders and Republican Donald Trump make desperate pleas to prospective primary voters in New Hampshire; as the state heads to the polls on Tuesday.
