Here is a round-up of global news developments:
- The Syrian army has made fresh gains against terrorists in the north-western province of Latakia. Earlier, government troops freed the town of Ratyan, northwest of the city of Aleppo. The army and its allied forces have inflicted heavy losses on terrorists across Syria in recent months.
- The European Union has slammed Israel for demolishing Palestinian houses in the occupied territories. The bloc has reiterated its opposition to expanding Israeli settlements in the West Bank. It urged a halt to the move after several homes were demolished south of the city of al-Khalil, also known as Hebron.
- A meeting aimed at ending war in Afghanistan has called for direct talks between the government and the Taliban. The Islamabad talks were attended by representatives from Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and the US. Afghanistan has been grappling with deadly violence since the US-led invasion in 2001.
- Iran says its crude oil sales to Europe have reached above 300-thousand barrels per day after the lifting of international sanctions. Oil sales to French company TOTAL will resume after its contract takes effect later this month. Italy's Eni is also set to sign an oil contract with Iran.
- Six people have been killed in a fresh Saudi airstrike in Yemen’s Ta’izz province. Several others were also wounded. Meanwhile, a Saudi soldier was shot dead in a Yemeni retaliatory attack in the kingdom’s Jizan province. More than 83-hundred Yemenis have been killed in the months-long Saudi war.
- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says Saudi Arabia is conducting indiscriminate bombing in Yemen. He added that Saudi warplanes are particularly targeting schools, hospitals and civilian infrastructure in Yemen. The world body has urged the UK to stop the flow of its weapons to a Saudi-led coalition.
- Turkey has tightened its visa rules for Iraqi citizens, despite an EU call to keep its borders open to refugees. The European Union has urged Ankara not to ignore its international obligations. Up to 20-thousand refugees are stranded at the Syria-Turkey border amid an escalation of war.
- German anti-refugee group PEGIDA has held a huge rally in the city of Dresden. The group has organized similar protests against asylum seekers in recent month. Chancellor Angela Merkel has called such rallies racist.
