Britain’s Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union has called off an industrial action planned for this weekend.
The RTM, in a statement, said that the 48-hour tube strike suspended following “significant progress” in talks with the London Underground management.
The walkout was planned for a prolonged dispute over job losses after authorities closed several ticketing offices. To avoid chaos, transport for London had expected to run trains and had warned that many stations could be closed from Saturday night until Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, the RTM has announced a number of walkouts over staff safety. It says seven planned strikes over the next four months are beginning with a 24-hour action by some 1,500 maintenance workers on February 12.
“Nobody should dare to underestimate the severe impact on track safety that the changes bulldozed through by London Underground have unleashed and which have forced our members to take a prolonged period of industrial action to protect themselves and their colleagues,” the RMT general secretary, Mick Cash, said.
