US airstrikes on Daesh killed 5 civilians in Iraq and Syria

One US airstrike in Syria on August 24 killed three civilians and another one in Iraq on September 24 left two other civilians dead.

US airstrikes on Daesh (ISIL) terrorists in Syria and Iraq left five civilians dead and eight others injured last year, the US Army admits.

One bombing on August 24 hit the stronghold of Raqqa, Syria, killing Junaid Hussain, an ISIL cyber-operative as well as three civilians, the US Army acknowledged on Friday.

"It was assessed three civilians in the vicinity of the strikes were killed and five more were injured," said the Central Command, which is in charge of American forces in the Middle East and North Africa.

Also, two other civilians were killed in another US airstrike near Sinjar, in northern Iraq, on September 24. Three civilians were also injured in two other US attacks.

"We deeply regret the unintentional loss of life and injuries resulting from those strikes," the Centcom statement said.

On January 15, the US military said five separate airstrikes in Iraq and Syria conducted between April 12 and July 4 last year left eight civilians killed and three others wounded.

Since August 2014, Washington and some of its allies have been conducting airstrikes against what they call Daesh positions in Iraq.

Some members of the US-led coalition have also been pounding purported ISIL positions inside Syria since September 2014, without any authorization from Damascus or the UN.

The US-led coalition has done little to stop the ISIL's advances in parts of Syria and in western Iraq.
