Ukraine’s military carried out mortar attacks on the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) “in the course of the week,” said an LPR official.
Igor Yashchenko, the deputy head of the LPR military headquarters, said Saturday that in that time span “Ukrainian troops breached the ceasefire twice… using 82 mm and 100 mm caliber mortars … heavy weapons prohibited by the Minsk agreements.”
“Several shots were fired from an 82 mm mortar from the side of the populated area of Krymskoye in the Urochishche-Sukhodol area between 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. on January 21.”
“Two shells were launched from a 120 mm mortar on our positions near the populated area of Veselogorovka from the side of the populated area of Troitskoye at 3:40 p.m.,” Yashchenko said.
The mortar attacks left no damage or injuries.
Ukraine’s eastern regions plunged into conflict after Crimea voted in a referendum in March 2014 to join the Russian Federation. The West and the government in Kiev accuse Moscow of having a major hand in the ongoing crisis in eastern Ukraine. Russia dismisses the claim.
Leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France met in Minsk, Belarus, on February 11-12, 2015. The outcome was the Minsk II agreement, which called for the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the frontlines and a ceasefire. The truce officially went into effect on February 14. However, the international effort has apparently failed to resolve the conflict.
The conflict in Ukraine has claimed the lives of over 8,000 people and displaced 1.5 million more.
