Fox News and the Democratic Party both play roles in the US electoral show, says American writer and political analyst Mickey Z.
Mickey Z., the author of Occupy This Book and Occupy These Photos, made the remarks in an interview with press TV on Saturday, after Hawkish American commentator Bill O’Reilly vowed to flee to Ireland if Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders becomes president of the United States.
On his Fox News show on Thursday, O’Reilly said, “If Bernie Sanders gets elected president, I’m fleeing … I’m going to Ireland. And they already know it. … I shouldn’t say it publicly because that will get Sanders more votes.”
“I shouldn’t say it publicly because that will get Sanders more votes, but I’m not going to pay 90 percent of my income to that guy,” added the blustery talk show host, who is proud of his Irish roots. “I’m sorry, I’m not doing it.”
Mickey Z. said, “The headline reads, ‘Bill O’Reilly vows to flee to Ireland if Sanders wins White House.’ Yes, that Bill O’Reilly. Fox News, The Factor, No Spin, and all that.”
“The ‘Sanders’ he ostensibly fears is Bernie Sanders. Yes, that Bernie Sanders. Socialism, Feel the Bern, revolution, and all that,” he added.
“The issue that has O’Reilly searching for his Irish passport is health care. You see, the alleged right winger is allegedly afraid that the alleged left winger will allegedly take ‘90 percent of his money’ to pay for all his allegedly socialist programs,” he stated.
“Such a premise could potentially be funny as a Saturday Night Live skit but it’s really just another reality show. Sort of American Idol meets WWE,” the analyst pointed out.
“You see, we’re supposed to believe we live in a democracy. To keep this illusion alive, we have TV characters playing the role of mortal enemies. We sit complacent, entranced by the spectacle, while the corporate puppeteers keep their eyes focused on next quarter’s profits as they urge us to vote - from a pre-selected list of options, of course,” he observed.
“Both Bill and Bernie have been at this a long time. They know their lines, always hit their marks, and aren’t afraid to chew the scenery, when necessary. It’s clear what’s in it for them. The bigger question is this: When will the rest of us realize there’s nothing in it for us?” concluded Mickey Z.
