In this edition of The Debate, Press TV interviews Sukant Chandan, a filmmaker and political commentator from London, and former US assistant secretary of defense, Lawrence Korb, from Washington, to discuss the reasons behind Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr's execution by the Saudi regime.

Chandan believes that Saudi Arabia’s blatant support for Takfiri terrorist groups such as Daesh is very embarrassing for Washington which claims to be fighting terrorism as the Riyadh regime is the US close ally in the Middle East.

Therefore, the US prefers to see a kind of monarchy in Saudi Arabia like the one in Kuwait, which has a sort of parliament and a more democratic facade to cover its support for terrorism, Chandan notes.

He believes that Saudi Arabia’s harsh reactions to dissidents are actually a kind of response to US pressures.

Meanwhile, Korb says that Riyadh is overreacting to anybody who wants to challenge its authority, no matter whether they are Sunnis or Shias, adding that Saudi Arabia is angry over Iran’s nuclear agreement with the West and US President Barack Obama’s reluctance to bomb Syria.
