Israeli forces have wounded a Palestinian whom they have accused of carrying out a stabbing attack in northern al-Quds (Jerusalem).
The attacker tried to stab police officers but failed and then attempted to flee but police shot him in the legs and arrested him, Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement on Monday.
An Israeli teenage girl was also apparently injured by bullet fragments from shots fired in the ensuing melee, added Samri.
Israel’s imposition in August of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the holy al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds (Jerusalem), the third holiest site in Islam, has triggered a wave of tensions in West Bank and Gaza.
The restrictions on worshipers, alongside increasing frequency of attacks by Israeli settlers backed by police, storming al-Aqsa Mosque, is a cause of frustration of Palestinians.
The Palestinians believe Tel Aviv seeks to alter the status quo of the sanctuary.
More than 144 Palestinians, including children and women, have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces since the beginning of the wave of violence. Some 25 Israelis have also died since October.
