Palestinian students injured in clashes with Israeli forces
At least 15 Palestinian university students have sustained gunshot wounds during clashes with Israeli military forces in the occupied West Bank.
The injuries came after Israeli troops intervened to break a rally by a number of students at the Palestine Technical University and opened indiscriminate fire, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said. Israeli forces also fired tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters.
The al-Bireh-based humanitarian organization said that five youths were shot and injured with live rounds, while 10 others were struck with rubber-coated steel bullets.
At least four university students suffered excessive tear gas inhalation. Twenty-five others were also moderately affected by tear gas, and treated at the scene by medics.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli military forces shot and killed two more young Palestinians in the Qalandiya refugee camp near the city of Ramallah in the West Bank.
Ahmad Jahajha, 20, and Hikmat Hamdan, 29, were both shot dead after they reportedly rammed their cars into a group of Israeli soldiers who had stormed the camp during an overnight arrest raid.
Tensions in the occupied territories have dramatically escalated since August, when the Israeli regime imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds.
The Palestinians say the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the compound.
They are also angry at increasing violence by Israeli settlers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and their attacks on Palestinian properties in the occupied territories.
More than 120 Palestinians have been killed in the recent escalation of violence since the start of October.
