Press TV has conducted an interview with Richard Becker, a member of the ANSWER Coalition in San Francisco, and Lawrence Korb, former US assistant secretary of defense in Washington, to discuss the illegal sanctions on Iran which were imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Tehran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Becker states imposing sanctions on Iran was “terrible injustice” which came at the behest of the United States and Britain.

He also maintains that sanctions are really reflective of the “power relationships” that exist throughout the world.

“We have this extreme, really unbalanced situation that exists based on power relationships and interest of empire that Israel can have nuclear weapons and can avoid all criticism, Iran does not have nuclear weapons and even the intelligence agencies of United States have said so since 2007 but Iran has to suffer,” he says.

He goes on to say that sanctions are a form of “economic warfare” against another country in which the people suffer.

“Iran has been subjected to sanctions which have inflicted death and economic destruction and now there is no sign at all that the big powers that have inflicted this on Iran are being called to question and called to compensate Iran for the damage that has been done,” he argues.

Becker further notes that the United States uses certain international bodies to justify its policies which in many cases really amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Korb, for his part, believes it was the UN Security Council which imposed sanctions on Iran, not the United States, adding that the closure of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear case will be a great opportunity to improve the country’s economy.
