Immigrant rights activists in the US have vowed to flood polling stations in November, 2016 to punish Republican front-runner Donald Trump and the GOP presidential field.

The advocates say they plan to sign up some 1 million Latino immigrants for citizenship and then quickly register them to vote in time to ensure Trump’s loss in the presidential race, the Washington Times reported.

The activists say the new voters could make a difference in the US presidential race, where most of the Republican field has tacked to the right.

Hispanic leaders state that the political influence of Latino voters should correspond with their size as the second-largest racial or ethnic group in the country behind whites.

“This is a huge amount of latent power,” said Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the National Partnership for New Americans.

Hispanic immigrants, however, have shown a lower tendency to become naturalized citizens in the US and have lower voting participation rates than other demographic groups, challenging the community’s leaders to get them more motivated.

Trump has inflamed Hispanic voters by insisting that the US must build a wall on the US-Mexico border to prevent Latinos in Central America from immigrating to the US.

He has also said that Mexico is sending “rapists” and other bad elements of society to the US.

Trump recently created furor in the US and around the world by proposing that Muslims should be denied entry to the US.

Trump’s statement came in response to the mass shootings in San Bernardino, California, early this month, in which a married couple described by US authorities as "radicalized" killed 14 people.

According to a recent study, however, white, right-wing Americans present a far greater terror threat to the United States than individuals linked to the ISIL or al-Qaeda extremist groups.
