Iran, Russia underline need for serious campaign against extremism

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian (R) and his Russian counterpart Mikhail Bogdanov

Senior Iranian and Russian officials have underlined the need for a serious campaign within framework of the international law against extremist groups.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Bogdanov, discussed the latest regional developments, including the crises in Syria and Yemen in a telephone conversation, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The two sides talked about the latest developments regarding the upcoming round of international talks on the Syria crisis, the third this year, which is reportedly scheduled to be held in New York on December 18-19.

The senior Iranian and Russian officials also discussed ways to bolster the political process in Syria.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has thus far claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people and left over one million injured, according to the UN.

So far this year, efforts to end the Syrian conflict have seen two rounds of talks – participated by Iran – in the Austrian capital of Vienna, one on October 30 and another on November 14. The talks have produced a general communiqué only, but marked substantial progress compared with previous talks, which were held without Iranian participation in the Swiss city of Geneva.

During their telephone conversation, Amir-Abdollahian and Bogdanov also discussed the situation in war-hit Yemen and underlined the need for intra-Yemeni dialogue as the best possible solution to the conflict in the Arab country. They also welcomed efforts by the UN special envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, to open peace talks on the Arab country.

Yemen has been under relentless Saudi airstrikes since March 26. Yemeni monitoring groups say the aggression has killed more than 7,500 people, most of them civilians.
