Funeral held for Palestinian teenager killed in West Bank

Thousands of mourners have held a funeral procession for a Palestinian teenager shot dead by Israeli forces during clashes in the occupied West Bank.

The mass funeral was held on Tuesday, hours after 19-year-old Malik Shahin was killed when Israeli forces stormed the Dheisheh refugee camp, located just south of Bethlehem, during a detention raid, Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

Violence broke out in the site when a group of Palestinian youths engaged in skirmishes with the Israeli troops, who fired tear gas canisters and live rounds to disperse the crowd.

Shahin was critically injured and later succumbed to his gunshot wounds. Several other Palestinians were also wounded in the melee.

According to locals, the teen who was shot in the head was left bleeding “for long before he was evacuated to the public hospital in Beit Jala, where medics pronounced him dead.”

Mourners chanted slogans in condemnation of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians.

Later on Tuesday, a 10-year-old Palestinian was seriously injured by Israeli forces in al-Jalazone refugee camp, located 7 kilometers (4.3 mile) north of Ramallah.

The developments came a day after a young Palestinian man was shot and killed after he allegedly stabbed and wounded an Israeli man near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron).

Tensions between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip continue unabated. The wave of unrest was triggered by Israel’s imposition in August of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Palestinians are also angry at increasing violence by Israeli settlers, who frequently storm the al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam. The Palestinians say the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the compound.

Nearly 120 Palestinians and about 20 Israelis have been killed in the recent wave of clashes between Palestinians and Israelis since the start of October.
