A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has hit the eastern region of the Central Asian country of Tajikistan, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says.
The USGS said on Monday that the quake was centered in an area located some 345 (214 miles) kilometers east of Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe, at 7:50 GMT.
The tremor struck a location some 111 kilometers (65 miles) southwest of Karakul, a sparsely populated mountainous area, at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).
An unnamed spokesman for Tajikistan’s Emergencies Committee said no immediate reports of casualties had been released.
The quake was also reportedly felt in the capital of neighboring Kyrgyzstan to the north, northern parts of Afghanistan to the south, as well as in nearby Pakistan and India. The neighboring countries have not reported any casualties.
Back in May, a temblor measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck an area about 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Dushanbe.
In October, hundreds were killed in an earthquake centered in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which was also felt in parts of Tajikistan.
