US no longer out of reach for Daesh, says Senate security chair

The Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group has expanded its reach beyond the borders of Syria and Iraq and is now capable of carrying out terror attacks on the US mainland, according to a senior US congressman.

“The tentacles of ISIS (ISIL) now are not only in Europe, but also in the United States of America,” said US Representative Michael McCaul, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

“We didn’t see this one coming,” McCaul told Fox News on Sunday, referring to Wednesday’s mass shooting in California, which he described as “an act of terrorism.”

The attack was carried out by two alleged Daesh sympathizers who killed 14 people and injured 21 others after storming a holiday party at a center for people with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino, California

McCaul, a Republican who represents Texas's 10th congressional district, said the shooting necessitates a comprehensive review of US policies and plans to curb the overwhelming surge in the security threats that the US is facing.

“We have stopped a lot of bad things from happening… but you can’t just stop it all,” he said. “The volume is so high; the chatter is so high, that it is almost impossible to stop it all.”

The US lawmaker then called on President Barack Obama to be frank with the American public and let them know the truth.

“I want him to tell the truth to the American people about what the threat nature really is, and what the threat actually is. It’s radical Islamic terrorism,” he said.

According to the White House, in a rare prime-time address on Sunday night, Obama will adress the California shooting and how the terror threat posed by Daesh has "evolved, and how we will defeat it."
