Putin approves economic sanctions against Turkey

  1. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree imposing economic sanctions against Turkey over the shooting down of a Russian jet in Syria. The sanctions affect imports of certain products, limit the operations of Turkish companies in Russia, and forbid Russian firms from employing Turkish staff.
  2. The Syrian army has accused Turkey of increasing supplies of weapons, ammunition, and equipment to terrorists. It says Ankara uses humanitarian convoys as cover for arms shipments in exchange for terrorists’ oil and stolen antiquities. The army also accused its northern neighbor of firing shells at its positions.
  3. In Istanbul, police have clashed with people protesting against the killing of a prominent pro-Kurdish lawyer in southeastern Turkey. Assailants opened fire on a gathering where the lawyer was delivering a statement, calling for an end to violence between Turkish forces and Kurdish militants.
  4. Anti-war activists have held a rally in London to oppose Britain's plans to join the US-led coalition in Syria. Prime Minister David Cameron renewed his calls to expand Britain’s aerial campaign against Daesh terrorists during his speech in the parliament on Thursday.
  5. Macedonian security forces have shot tear gas at stone-throwing refugees on the country’s southern border with Greece. The clashes erupted over the electrocution of a refugee on the Greek side of the border. Macedonia is fencing off all refugees except for Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans.
  6. Millions of Muslim pilgrims are marching towards the holy city of Karbala in Iraq to commemorate Arba’een. The ceremony on Thursday marks forty days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam. Iranians constitute a large percentage of the pilgrims attending this march every year.
  7. President Barrack Obama says the US should do something to make it harder for criminals to get guns. He urged real action on US gun laws. Obama made the remarks after a shooting in Colorado Springs killed three people, including a policeman.
  8. A rocket attack on a UN base in northern Mali has left two peacekeepers and a civilian dead. It came days after a deadly raid on a hotel in the capital Bamako. Mali along with regional states, including Nigeria, is fighting against the Boko Haram Takfiri terrorists.
