The US has issued a worldwide travel alert, warning its citizens of "increased terrorist threats" following the Paris attacks.

The alert issued by the US State Department on Monday came in the wake of the November 13 attacks in the French capital that killed 130 people.

"Current information suggests that Daesh, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions," the travel warning said.

The alert, being in place until February 24, 2016, warned that "the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as members of Daesh return from Syria and Iraq," referring to foreign fighters who return home after having fought alongside the terrorist group.

The travel alert advises US citizens to "exercise vigilance when in public places or using transportation.”

They are also advised to “be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid large crowds or crowded places and exercise particular caution during the holiday season."

Over the past year, there have been multiple terrorist attacks in France, Nigeria, Denmark, Turkey, and Mali.

The State Department also sought to rally greater cooperation for crushing terrorist groups’ "global network” and urged allies to "increase pressure on ISIL at its core".

The last time America issued a worldwide travel alert was in December 2014, in response to an attack in Sydney, Australia, when it warned of the risk of "lone wolf" attacks.
