1. An hours-long operation in a Paris suburb to hunt the suspected mastermind of Friday’s terror attacks is over. Police raided an apartment where Abdelhamid Abu-Oud was believed to be hiding. At least two suspects, including a woman who blew herself up, were killed during the raid. Seven people were also arrested.
2. The French Muslim Council has called on all 2,500 mosques in the country to use this Friday’s prayers to denounce violence and terrorism. The council says the mosques will condemn such acts unambiguously. The Grand Mosque of Paris has urged Muslims to join an anti-terror protest on Friday.
3. Syrian government forces gain more grounds in the battle against terrorist groups outside the city of Aleppo. The army managed to recapture several areas, including the town of Ays. This is a major victory since Ays has a highway which connects Aleppo to the capital Damascus.
4. Saudi Arabia continues its deadly aerial raids against impoverished Yemen. A man and his daughter were killed after Saudi jets bombarded residential areas in Ta’izz province. Saudi warplanes also pounded Ma’rib province. Over 7,100 Yemenis have died since the start of the Saudi war in late March.
5. The Russian foreign minister says the departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as a pre-condition for unity against Daesh is unacceptable. Sergey Lavrov said there is still no agreement among world powers that Assad should be excluded from participating in the future political settlement in Syria.
6. Human Rights Watch has urged the Pakistani government to end rampant police harassment, threats and violence against Afghan refugees. In a report, the rights group says police abuses have prompted fearful Afghans to restrict their movements. There are one and half million registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
7. China has urged the US to stop heightening tensions in the South China Sea and stop complicating disputes in the region. Beijing has also defended its construction activities on a chain of islands in the South China Sea. It says no country has the right to point finger at the activities.
8. Greek police have clashed with farmers protesting against tax hikes in the capital Athens. Police fired tear gas as a group of protesters tried to enter the parliament. Most demonstrators were from the island of Crete, Greece’s hub of agriculture.
