American city elects Muslim-majority council
A traditionally Polish-Catholic city in the US state of Michigan has elected a Muslim-majority council for the first time in the US history.
Hamtramck, with a population of over 22,000 people in Wayne County, recently went to polls to elect council members and the top three winners are all Muslims.
Eight candidates were running for the three positions in the council.
Two of the seats were gained by incumbent members and one, occupied by another Muslim, was not up for election. Now there are four Muslims in the six-member council.
"Hamtramck has made history," community leader Bill Meyer said. "The election was far from close, with the three Muslim winners each gaining over 1,000 votes, while the other three candidates garnered less than 700 votes each."
According to Meyer, Muslims have brought “stability, security and sobriety while lessening the amount of drugs and crime.”
Only 12 percent of Hamtramck population is Poles. Arabs comprise 24 percent of the population, while 19 percents are African Americans and 15 percent Bangladeshis.
"We all want to live peacefully and respectfully," said 28-year-old Saad Almasmari, who came first in the election, in a video posted on social media in October. "Our special thing is ... the diversity in this town."
