A police officer from the US state of Arkansas shot himself to implicate a Hispanic suspect.
Arkansas police officer David House, 50, was arrested Tuesday after he confessed he had fabricated the story, Arkansas Online reported.
Houser had initially claimed that he had been shot by the suspect in the line of duty on October 24.
It transpired, however, that the bullet was actually fired by him rather than the Hispanic male he said he stopped during traffic.
"It's every chief's worst nightmare to get a call that your officer has been shot or involved in a shooting," said Nathan Cook, the police department chief from the city of England. "To investigate and find out it's self-inflicted just puts a whole different spin on it."
In a report following the late October incident, the cop said he "exchanged gunfire with a suspect who fled from him driving a sport utility vehicle."
Arkansas State Police subsequently launched an investigation, which found information "contradictory to Houser's initial statement."
In the meantime, the suspect remained unknown as he was non-existent.
In an interview later, the police officer "admitted that he had fabricated that whole thing.”
He also confessed that he had placed spent ammunition rounds at the scene to back up his account of the incident.
The 50 year old, who now faces a felony charge of filing a false police report, was fired from the police department.
