Germany disposes of WW II bomb at airport

German authorities say bomb disposal experts have safely detonated a World War II explosive at an airport in Germany’s western city of Dusseldorf.

The 125-kilogram (275-pound) bomb was unearthed overnight near the runway of the airport, officials said Monday.

Several flights had to be canceled in order for the bomb disposal team to detonate the bomb. Some 38 takeoffs or landings were also moved forward or backward during the disposal.

Seventy years after the end of the war, bombs are still frequently found during construction work in major German cities like Munich and Berlin.

Last month, a World War II-era bomb was found near the entrance of a popular museum in Munich. The museum was evacuated after the discovery. Specialists were able to dislodge the bomb, but said it should be moved to a safe location for controlled explosion.
