German police have arrested a man suspected of kidnapping and killing a four-year-old Bosnian refugee boy who has also admitted to murdering another kid.
An eight-hour autopsy confirmed the body of the four-year-old was that of Mohamed, prosecutors said on Friday.
The Bosnian boy, Mohamed, had been missing since October 1, when his mother took him and his sisters to the main refugee registration center in Berlin, Lageso, to receive her allowance.
"The man confessed overnight that he had also killed Elias," said Berlin police spokesman Stefan Redlich, referring to the second victim, six-year-old German boy, Elias, who had been missing since July.
The suspected pedophile, identified as Silvio S., was arrested on Thursday after his mother identified him in CCTV footage released by police.
The refugee boy’s disappearance triggered a massive police operation, with the missing child's photo appearing regularly on television screens in Berlin's subway trains.
Police said the refugee boy had been choked to death a day after his kidnapping.
Forensic investigators found signs of strangulation on Mohamed's neck.
The man, who worked as a security guard, kidnapped the boy from Lageso by giving him a toy.
The guard took the four-year-old boy to his apartment and sexually abused him, according to prosecutor Michael von Hagen.
When the child began screaming, the suspect strangled him with his belt to prevent anyone from hearing, the prosecutor said.
Now police and the investigators are probing to find possible links to other missing children.
Berlin's Lageso has seen lengthy queues of refugees waiting to be processed and is often a chaotic scene.
