Organs of brain dead Iranian sportswoman donated

The vital organs of female Iranian athlete Reyhaneh Beheshti have been donated to patients in need of transplantation to save their lives, nearly a week after the young sportswoman was diagnosed as brain dead.

Beheshti suffered a sudden stroke in the Iranian city of Mashhad, located 897 kilometers (557 miles) northeast of the capital, Tehran, early on October 12, and was taken to the city’s Farabi Hospital.

The 27-year-old underwent a surgery, but did not regain consciousness afterward.

Beheshti’s condition turned worse despite medical efforts to save her, and the sportswoman, who also used to train elementary school students as a physical education teacher, experienced brain death.

Since Beheshti had registered herself as an organ donor years earlier, consent from family members was not required for organ donation.

The deceased Iranian sportswoman is survived by an 11-month daughter named Mahta and her husband, Hamed Ajaminejad, who is a physical education teacher.
