Russia’s National Anti-terrorism Committee says security forces have killed at least four militants during clashes in the Republic of Dagestan.
The committee said in a statement issued on Saturday that Russian security forces engaged the militants in a shootout in the Khasavyurt region of Dagestan, which borders the Chechen Republic, commonly referred to as Chechnya.
The statement said one officer with the Special Forces was wounded in the shootout near the village of Kurush.
Those killed were “involved in the September murder” of a moderate preacher in the troubled region, the statement added.
Last month, masked militants killed Magomed Khidirov, the 34-year-old preacher, who was shot by men as he went to congregational morning prayers.
Khidirov was known for warning the region’s youth against joining the Takfiri Daesh terrorists and al-Qaeda-linked groups.
On October 11, Russian authorities arrested a group of people preparing to carry out a terrorist attack in the capital, Moscow. Russian law enforcement agencies said an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered and defused at an apartment.
Authorities in Russia say hundreds of Chechens have left for Syria to join Daesh since March 2011.
Moscow began its aerial campaign against Daesh in Syria on September 30 upon a request from the Damascus government.
Russia has been fighting militants since the mid-1990s in its North Caucasus region, where the republics of Chechen, Dagestan, and Ingushetia have been the scene of sporadic attacks and militant clashes.
