Press TV has interviewed Mkhaimar Abusada, a professor at al-Azhar University in the Gaza Strip, about recent Israeli aggression against Palestinians in the occupied territories.
In August, the Tel Aviv regime imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
That and a ramp-up in violence by illegal Israeli settlers against Palestinians and vandalizing their properties triggered the latest wave of deadly tensions between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the occupied territories as well as the blockaded Gaza Strip.
Over 40 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis over the past few weeks.
Mkhaimar Abusada said the Israeli regime is “violating the status quo” of al-Aqsa, and it has “implemented a number of policies” that seek to change that status quo, which, he adds, “has existed for many years.”
“Israel is trying to take advantage of the collapse and the political upheavals in the Arab world to try to change the status quo and create new facts on the ground by dividing al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslim and Jewish prayers.”
The Palestinian academic also argues that Tel Aviv will not be pleased with what he describes as “internationalization” of the Israeli aggression against Palestinians.
“Israel is afraid that any internationalization of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will allow the UN and the Security Council to implement … resolutions which will put an end to the Israeli occupation … and allow the Palestinians to live freely as all world nations.”
