Renewed fighting between Kurdish militants and security forces in southeastern Turkey has left an officer dead.
Officials say a second police officer was wounded after gunfire broke out in the town of Sirnak. The violence began when state workers moved in to demolish barricades set up by the Kurdistan Workers Party. Armored vehicles were also stationed around the town and police snipers deployed on top of buildings. The fresh fighting comes despite a unilateral ceasefire announced by the PKK last week. Ankara, however, has dismissed the unilateral truce, calling it a ploy.
