Iran men's national wheelchair basketball team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mitsubishi Electric 2015 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Asia Oceania Championship in Japan following a resounding win over the Saudi Arabian team.
In a match held at the Chiba Port Arena in the city of Chiba, located about 40 kilometers (24 miles) southeast of the capital, Tokyo, on Wednesday, Iranian physically-challenged athletes emerged victorious in their last group stage fixture and got past the Saudis 123-32.
Earlier in the tournament, the Iranian outfit pulled off a glorious 106-26 victory against Chinese Taipei on October 13, and earned a 100-41 win in an encounter against the Philippine basketball players the previous day.
The Persians suffered a 56-83 defeat at the hands of defending champions Australia on October 11.
The Mitsubishi Electric 2015 IWBF Asia Oceania Championship started in Chiba, Japan, on October 10 and will wrap up on October 17.
There are twelve men’s teams competing for three spots, and three women’s teams competing for one spot at the Rio 2016 Summer Paralympics, Brazil.
Iran had been drawn in Group A along with Australia, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia at the preliminary round.
Group B consisted of Afghanistan, China, host Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.
Physically-challenged female basketball players from Australia, China and Japan are competing in the women’s section.
