Ben Carson closing in on Donald Trump in US presidential race: Poll
Donald Trump, the leading US presidential candidate in the Republican Party, is now nearly even with Ben Carson among registered GOP voters, according to a new national poll.
The Fox News poll, which was released on Tuesday, shows that although Trump is still on top with 24 percent support, he is only one point ahead of Carson, who has 23 percent support.
This is the third poll of its kind that points to the retired neurosurgeon's steady gain on his billionaire opponent.
A Fox News poll conducted in late September found Trump leading Carson 26 percent to 18 percent. The figure stood at 25 percent to 12 percent in August.
The latest Fox News poll also found that US Senator Ted Cruz of Texas is in third place with 10 percent support. He was followed by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida at 9 percent and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush at 8 percent.
Former business executive Carly Fiorina and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee each scored 5 percent support in the survey. This marks a significant drop for Fiorina, who gained 9 percent in the previous Fox survey, conducted right after the last Republican presidential debate.
Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky scored 3 percent while New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Ohio Governor John Kasich, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and former New York Governor George Pataki scored one percent each.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton still leads her rivals, with 45 percent of likely Democratic voters supporting her while 25 percent support US Senator Bernie Sanders.
