The European Space Agency and NASA have announced a joint mission to learn more about asteroids. The mission is named 'Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment'.
The two agencies say this is a practice run to prepare for any potential asteroids that could come hurtling towards Earth. The project will involve sending a spacecraft to a small asteroid. Also another spacecraft will join the first to monitor its effects. They will be launched in October 2020. The European Space Agency and NASA say better understanding of the surface and internal structure of asteroids is crucial to improving deflection technologies.
