Turkish authorities have arrested six suspected members of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group over possible involvement in illegally minting coins for use in areas of Syria currently under control of the militants.

The arrests were made in Gaziantep, southeastern Turkey, the official Anatolia news agency said Wednesday, quoting a statement by the regional governor’s office.

According to the report, police confiscated about 56 coins in four different sizes, along with coin punches, presses, and other related equipment.

The suspects were arrested after a raid in the town of Sahinbey, near the Turkish border with Syria. The group includes foreigners of unspecified nationalities.

The arrests come as reports have been circulating that Daesh is seeking to establish its own currency in areas it control in Syria in order to break away from the global financial system.

Turkey’s neighbor, Syria, has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since 2011, which has left more than 250,000 people dead and millions of others wounded or displaced.

The Daesh terrorists currently control areas in Syria and Iraq.
