Iranian basketball players have finished their campaign at the preliminary round of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in China, overwhelming their Malaysian opponents.
On Friday, the Iranian squad opened the match at the Changsha Social Work College’s gymnasium in the south-central Chinese city of Changsha in energetic fashion and outscored the Malaysians 35-5 in the first quarter.
The second quarter played out much like the first, with the Iranians utilizing some quality offensive breaks to win it 27-3.
The Iranians sportsmen maintained their supremacy in the third quarter, and registered a 30-18 victory.
The Iranian players did not relinquish and kept the lead in the final quarter to surge ahead, and rolled to a 30-16 win over the Malaysian outfit. Iran finally eased past Malaysia 122-42.
Mohammad Hassanzadeh Saberi Akhlaghi was the leading scorer for Iran with 28 points, and Malaysia’s Wei Hong Choo chipped in 16 points.
Iran’s basketball team crushed Japan 86–48 in its opening match on September 23, and defeated the Indian side 88–66 in its second encounter the next day.
The Iranian outfit will return to action on Sunday as it takes aim at Hong Kong in the second round of the tournament at the Changsha Social Work Colleges gymnasium.
The 2015 FIBA Asia Championship opened in Changsha, China on September 23, and will wrap up on October 3.
The winner of the tournament qualifies for the basketball tournament on the 2016 Summer Olympics, while the next three best teams will participate at the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men.
