The Egyptian Interior Ministry says at least two policemen have been killed in a roadside bombing attack carried out by Daesh (ISIL) militants in the Sinai Peninsula.
The Interior Ministry said in a Saturday statement that the attack on a convoy of Egyptian security forces in the provincial capital of el-Arish also left at least 16 personnel wounded.
The bomb, which had been planted inside a car parked on the side of a road, went off as the convoy passed.
Earlier reports said five security personnel had lost their lives.
In a twitter post, the terrorist Velayat Sinai group, which is active and has been behind many such raids in Sinai, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Cairo has been struggling to counter a rise in acts of terrorism and militancy in the Sinai Peninsula since the military ousted the country’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in July 2013.
The Egyptian military views the region as a sanctuary for extremists, who use the volatile region as a safe haven for their terrorist activities.
The terrorist Velayat Sinai group, previously known as Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, last November pledged allegiance to the Daesh terrorist group, which has been carrying out atrocities in Iraq and neighboring Syria.
