Gunmen shoot dead Pakistani prison official, his brother: Sources

Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a prison official and his brother in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, sources say.

Zahir Shah, the deputy superintendent of the Peshawar prison – where a large number of militants have been incarcerated – was killed at his home at the Hari Chand Village, some 60 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of Peshawar, on Thursday, local residents said.

According to the locals, four armed men arrived on motorcycles and two went inside the house, pretending to be visitors on the Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice).

“Unknown gunmen shot dead Zahir Shah and his brother and fled on motorcycles,” local police chief Hassan Khan told AFP.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, but pro-Taliban militants have been blamed for similar raids in the past.

Last Friday, some 14 militants entered an air force base outside Peshawar and killed 29 people.

The Pakistani army began a military operation in the country’s northwestern tribal regions in June 2014 in a bid to eradicate militant bases there. The operation came after a deadly raid on the Karachi International Airport ended Islamabad’s faltering peace talks with pro-Taliban militants.

The army stepped up its anti-terror campaign following a late 2014 attack on a military-run school in Peshawar, which claimed the lives of about 150 people, mostly children.

The military says it has managed to kill more than 2,800 militants over the past months.
