Two campaign officials working for US Republican presidential candidates and senators Rand Paul and Marco Rubio have been involved in a fight at a bar in the state of Michigan.
Paul's national political director John Yob accused Rubio’s deputy campaign manager Rich Beeson of hitting him at a bar on Thursday evening on the eve of a Republican conference where several GOP presidential candidates are scheduled to speak.
"Last night I went to a bar on Mackinac Island for the GOP Mackinac Conference," Yob wrote on Facebook.
"I ran into a guy named Rich Beeson, who frankly I didn't even know who it was at first because he isn't relevant in our political world. Anyway, he is Marco Rubio's national campaign manager [sic]. He literally physically assaulted me by punching me in the face," Yob added.
Yob said the incident, which occurred at the city of Mackinac Island, was captured "on video, from multiple angles."
“It wasn’t a brawl,” Mackinac Island police chief Brett Riccinto told Britain's Guardian newspaper on Friday. “If anything, it was a shove. Literally, it was a shove. This thing has been blown way, way, way out of proportion.”
Beeson and Yob have not responded to a request for comment.
Senator Rubio of Florida is currently ranked 5th in opinion polls among the 16 Republican presidential candidates seeking their party’s nomination for US president. Senator Paul of Kentucky is at 7th place.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll released this week shows that billionaire businessman Donald Trump continues to dominate the crowded GOP field.
