A volcano in Indonesia’s North Sumatra Province has erupted, sending ash at least three kilometers into the sky.
Footage from local media showed ash covering a housing complex near Mount Sinabung, which erupted on Tuesday.
There have been no reports of injuries, but Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters that the activity of the volcano remains at a “dangerous” level.
The BNPB also said the Tuesday eruption was the biggest in the country since June, when more than 2,500 people were evacuated.
Mount Sinabung is located on the island of Sumatra northwest of Indonesia. It is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes located in Indonesia along the “Ring of Fire” volcanic belt around the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
Sinabung had been dormant for centuries before it became active again in 2010. The volcano has erupted intermittently since 2013.
