The United States has warned its citizens in South Africa of a possible attack by "extremists" against American government and business interests.
The US embassy in Pretoria said in a statement on its website Tuesday that US facilities or interests are potential targets of extremist groups, a rare security alert in a stable country seldom associated with militancy.
The embassy said it had no information about a specific target or timing, but warned US citizens to stay vigilant and review their personal security plans.
The diplomatic mission in Pretoria “has received information that extremists may be targeting US interests in South Africa, to possibly include US government facilities and other facilities identifiable with US business interests,” the statement said.
“There is no additional information as to timing or potential targeting,” the message added.
South Africa’s state security department refused to confirm or deny knowledge of the threat.
The US State Department has not issued a travel warning to South Africa at this time.
According to the US State Department, "Anti-US violence is not common in South Africa, but the Department of State remains concerned about the continued worldwide threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and other violent actions against US citizens and interests overseas."
