The Iranian national men’s basketball team has finished first at the 2015 William Jones Cup in Taiwan, after pulling off an emphatic victory over Russian squad Spartak Primorye.
On Saturday, the Iranian sportsmen registered a 78-54 win against the Vladivostok-based side in a match staged at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City.
The Iranian squad opened the game in a dominant fashion and racked up most of the points to outscore the Russians 18-14 at the end of the first quarter.
They then extended their lead into the second quarter, and managed to win it by 17 points to 13. The Iranian players continued with their surge in the third quarter and widened the gap with diverse attacks and blocks to end the quarter 31-18.
The Iranians did not relinquish superiority after the break, and were strong on all fronts. They eventually dominated the fourth quarter 12-10.
Russian athlete Dmitrii Uzinskii scored 23 points for Spartak Primorye, while Iran’s Mahdi Kamrani charted 13 points.
The Iranian team had defeated Chinese Taipei A 69-63 in an awe-inspiring and competitive match on Friday.
The 2015 William Jones Cup started in Taiwan on August 29 and will run until September 6. The event is a top-level international basketball tournament of FIBA Asia.
