The Iranian embassy in Kuwait has dismissed accusations bandied about in Kuwaiti media linking Tehran to a terror cell, saying a “systematic” campaign is underway to harm relations between neighboring states.
“The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran expresses its deep sorrow over the mentioning of Iran in an internal case in Kuwait that is basically related to the discovery of weapons and ammunition," the diplomatic mission said in a statement Thursday.
Kuwait charged 24 people, including one Iranian, on Tuesday, with espionage and smuggling explosives, as well as possessing firearms and ammunition with the intention of carrying out acts of aggression against the state. The trial of the alleged cell is expected on September 15 in Kuwait's lower court.
The Iranian statement, which was carried by Iran's official IRNA agency, said the embassy has yet to be officially notified of the arrest of a suspected Iranian national, despite claims by the Kuwaiti media.
It said Iran is deeply dissatisfied with the “systematic continuation of negative propaganda” by the Kuwaiti media against relations between the two countries, adding that the campaign is just based on “unproven charges.”
"The nature of Iran-Kuwait relations does not accept such charges entailed in the indictment filed by Kuwaiti prosecutor's office," the statement said.
It added that Iran still insists on its constructive role in “consolidating stability and peace” in the Middle East.
