Security forces in Nigeria have recently detained a number of Takfiri Boko Haram militants, including a key commander, linked to several bombings across the country.

Notorious Boko Haram commander Usman Shuiabu, also known as Money, along with some 16 other members of the terror group have been arrested in the states of Lagos, Kano, Plateau, Enugu and Gombe during the past two months, Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) said in a Sunday statement.

“Shuaibu admitted being the leader of a team of nine sect members that was dispatched from Sambisa Forest” to carry out bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria, the statement said.

It also added that DSS operatives had foiled the terrorists’ plots to attack the southwestern Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial hub.

“The sudden influx of Boko Haram members into Lagos state points to the determination of the sect to extend its nefarious terrorist activities to the state and in fact, other parts of the country,” according to the statement.

The DSS said on Friday it had detained a 14-year-old boy spying for Boko Haram at the main airport of the capital, Abuja. The teenager had reportedly spied on security measures and the movements of passengers at the airport.

Boko Haram began its militancy against the government of Nigeria in 2009. Amnesty International says 17,000 people have been killed since then.

The violence has spilled over into Nigeria’s neighboring countries. Soldiers from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger have been battling the terrorists in recent months.
