Since the onset of 2015, there has been an average of one mass shooting per day in the United States, according to a website called Mass Shooting Tracker.
As of August 26, the year’s 238th day, there have been 247 instances of mass shootings reported in the US.
The shocking revelation comes hot on the heels of the on-air shooting of Reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward from local CBS news station WDBJ who were killed by a disgruntled employee on Tuesday, while doing a live report in Moneta, Virginia.
The incident once again heated up gun control debates in the country, where even President Obama called for action to curb the problem.
“What we know is that the number of people who die from gun-related incidents around this country dwarfs any deaths that happen through terrorism,” Obama said on Wednesday.
Mass Shooting Tracker is a website which lists all such incidents complete with details like date, location and the number of casualties.
According to creators of Mass Shooting Tracker, there is a major difference between FBI’s definition of mass shooting and that of the mainstream media.
That is why “the most obscene incidents of gun violence usually do not make the mainstream news at all,” the website adds.
FBI defines mass shootings as the ones where four or more people are killed at once while the media consider any shooting spree with four or more people shot a mass shooting.
