Saudi Arabia’s Health Ministry has said that one more person has fallen victim to the MERS disease in the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the ministry confirmed the death of a 71-year-old man in the capital, Riyadh, adding that nine other new cases of MERS had also been registered.
The new figures bring the total death toll from MERS in Saudi Arabia to 480 and the number of infected people to 1,115 since the disease was first discovered in 2012.
MERS, which stands for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, is a respiratory disease that can cause coughing, fever and severe pneumonia. It was first discovered in September 2012 in a Qatari man who had traveled to Saudi Arabia.
In addition to Saudi Arabia, which is worst hit by the virus, MERS has been reported in more than 20 other countries. Some Persian Gulf Arab states, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Tunisia and Britain have been affected by the virus. Most of the reported cases have been linked to the Middle East.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the preliminary results of studies on MERS indicate that people working with camels are at increased risk of infection by the disease.
