Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says Lebanon is a role model of resistance, stressing that Tehran will stand by the Lebanese nation.
“Today, in Lebanon, which is an obvious example of tolerance and resistance, all should cooperate and Iran is ready, too, to stand by the Lebanese and cooperate with the nation,” Zarif said in a press conference following a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday.
Zarif also praised the Lebanese premier’s role in maintaining security, fighting extremism and terrorism, and fostering unity among different Lebanese groups.
The senior Iranian official arrived in Beirut on Tuesday on the first leg of a regional tour, which will also take him to Syria, Pakistan and India.
Upon arrival in Beirut, Zarif said he hoped his visit to Lebanon would mark a new era in relations between the Islamic Republic and the Arab country.
He said that he would discuss ways to reinforce cooperation between Tehran and Beirut as well as issues pertaining to peace and security in the region.
In addition to talks with the Lebanese premier, Zarif also met with Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary general of Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday he is expected in Syria where the top Iranian diplomat will meet with senior Syrian officials to exchange views on bilateral ties as well as regional developments.
In July, Zarif also visited Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar on a regional tour during which he held talks on major developments in the Middle East as well as ways to expand bilateral relations with the three Arab countries.
