Japan marks the 70th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of the city of Hiroshima.
The ceremony was held at Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park. Tens of thousands of people took part in the event, including Japanese officials and delegates representing 100 countries. They observed a moment of silence at 8:15 a.m. local time when the 4-thousand-kilogram uranium bomb landed on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Thousands of lanterns were also released on Motoyasu River to honor the memory of the victims. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered a speech during the ceremony, saying that his country has a mission to create a world without nuclear arms.
