A Palestinian rights group has called on the international community to pressure the Tel Aviv regime to release several Palestinian prisoners who have been on hunger strike in Israeli jails for weeks.
According to reports on Wednesday, the Asra Center for Prisoner Studies urged the international community to mobilize efforts to pressure Israel to meet the demands of the Palestinian inmates.
The group also censured the Tel Aviv regime for turning a blind eye to the plight of the Palestinian hunger strikers.
Muhammad Allan, a 33-year-old Palestinian detainee, is now on the 50th day of his hunger strike in an Israeli jail. Reports say he is facing numerous medical problems as he has lost a great amount of weight, is unable to move and is also suffering from low blood pressure.
Another Palestinian prisoner, Abd al-Rahman Othman, is on the 25th day of his hunger strike to protest against his two-year solitary confinement in Israel’s Eshel jail.
A number of other Palestinian prisoners have also gone on hunger strike to show their anger at Tel Aviv’s disregard for the medical condition of the Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails as well as the regime’s illegal practice of administrative detention.
Last week, Israel's parliament (Knesset) ratified a law which allowed the force-feeding of Palestinian prisoners who are on hunger strike in Israeli jails.
The law garnered harsh criticism from rights groups that slammed the legislation as a form of torture to silence the Palestinian protesters.
Administrative detention is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows Tel Aviv to imprison Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.
According to reports, over 7,000 Palestinians are incarcerated in 17 Israeli prisons and detention camps, 540 of whom are held under administrative detention.
