German police have shot and seriously injured a Guinean refugee, who is said to have attacked another asylum-seeker with a knife.
Police said the 23-year-old attacker had stabbed his 27-year-old flatmate in the hand and arm in a brawl on Saturday at a shelter for asylum seekers in the city of Bonn.
Police on Sunday surrounded the shelter and tried to speak with the attacker, but the knife-wielding suspect jumped out of a window and tried to flee. The authorities tried to stop the Guinean man using pepper spray before shooting him in the arm and shoulder, according to the police.
The wounded man was then transferred to a hospital for treatment. Police said he is now in stable condition.
Record influx of refugees
Authorities in Germany say the country has received more than 300,000 asylum seekers this year alone. According to the daily Die Welt on Saturday, “302,415 asylum seekers have already been registered” this year.
German officials have repeatedly voiced concern about the huge influx of refugees.
The refugees’ office had initially said it would be expecting 450,000 asylum seekers in 2015; however, the governmental organization revised the forecast up to a record 500,000.
In 2014, Germany received more than 202,000 asylum requests, 60 percent more than in 2013.
