A surfer has been seriously injured by a shark off the Australian eastern coast in another shark attack less than a week after a fatal one, police say.
The surfer, a man in his 40s, sustained puncture wounds to his legs and hands in the early hours of Friday, police said in a statement.
The incident happened in the eastern town of Evans Head, 550 kilometers (340 miles) north of Sydney, the statement added.
He was taken by ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital in serious but stable condition.
On July 26, 46-year-old recreational diver, Damian Johnson, was attacked to his death by a shark off the island state of Tasmania.
Sharks are common off Australia's beaches, but fatal attacks are rare. The country has averaged fewer than two deadly attacks per year in recent decades.
