Economic sanctions against Iran crime: Iraq PM
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi says the economic sanctions imposed on Iran are a “crime”.
Abadi made the remarks in a statement which his office released following the Iraqi premier’s meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, on Monday.
During the meeting, Abadi also congratulated the Iranian nation on the conclusion of the nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 countries, saying Iran’s success is a victory for the whole region.
On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – finalized the text of an agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
Under the JCPOA, limits are put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for a set of commitments by the P5+1, including the removal of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.
Abadi stressed that it is Iran’s right to have access to nuclear technology and nobody can deny such a right.
He also referred to the situation of the region, stressing that cooperation between the Middle Eastern countries can root out conflicts and violence in the region.
The Iraqi prime minister further noted that it is in the interest of the Middle East that regional countries coexist “peacefully” as enemies seek division and tribal conflict in the region.
Commenting about the cooperation between Iran and Iraq on the conflict in the region, the senior Iraqi diplomat said, “Iraq has special relations with Iran, which is among the first countries that helped Iraq in its fight against the ISIL" Takfiri group.
Zarif, for his part, thanked the Iraqi government for its supportive stance on bilateral and regional issues.
“We feel that the resolution of [Iran’s] nuclear issue is certainly to the benefit of Iran, Iraq and all countries in the region,” Zarif said.
He also reaffirmed that Tehran will keep supporting Iraq in the fight against the ISIL terrorist group.
The Takfiri group launched its deadly terror campaign in June 2014 and took control of portions of Iraqi territory.
